Start By Smiling

You’ve heard the phrase “fake it until you make it” – adopting this philosophy does work, its all about a positive mindset, working on the premise that you know eventually it will work.
Smiling has exactly the same impact, smiling through the discomfort of an exercise class or something which you find really difficult says to your Mind Monkey “Come on girl, we can do this” – let’s Grin and Bear it!
Smiling can have a positive impact on mood and well-being in several ways:
Facial feedback hypothesis
According to the facial feedback hypothesis, facial expressions can influence our emotions. When we smile, even if it’s a forced or fake smile, the muscles involved in the act of smiling send signals to the brain, which in turn releases neurotransmitters associated with positive emotions, such as endorphins and serotonin. This can create a feedback loop where the act of smiling can actually induce feelings of happiness and improve mood.
Stress Reduction
Smiling has been found to reduce stress levels. When we smile, it can help lower cortisol, a hormone associated with stress. The release of endorphins during smiling can also counteract the effects of stress hormones and promote relaxation.
Social Interaction & Connection
Smiling is a social cue that signals approachability, friendliness, and positive emotions. When we smile at others, it often elicits positive responses and encourages social interaction. Human beings are social creatures, and positive social connections can have a significant impact on mood and overall well-being. By smiling, we can create a positive social environment and foster deeper connections with others, which in turn can improve our mood.
Perception & Mindset
Smiling can influence how we perceive and interpret situations. When we smile, we tend to view events and experiences more positively. It can help shift our mindset towards a more optimistic outlook, allowing us to see the brighter side of things and find joy even in challenging circumstances. This positive perception can contribute to an improved mood and overall well-being.
Contagious Effect
Smiling is contagious. When we smile at someone, it often prompts them to smile back. This exchange of smiles can create a positive ripple effect, spreading happiness and improving the mood not just for ourselves, but also for those around us. This social contagion of positive emotions can contribute to a more positive and uplifting atmosphere, benefiting everyone involved.
It's Not Easy, But It's Worth It
While smiling alone may not solve all problems or address deep-seated issues, it can be a simple and effective tool to enhance mood, reduce stress, and create a positive social environment. So, don’t hesitate to smile—it’s a small gesture that can make a big difference in your own well-being and the well-being of others.
The biggest effect of “Grin and Bear it” is that you’re saying to yourself, I’m doing something really hard here, its difficult, but I’m enjoy the challenge. A lot of things we need to do, especially when it comes to our health and wellbeing are not at the top of our “I can’t wait to do that” list – but it’s true that change is in the uncomfortable zone and the more you smile while you’re uncomfortable, the easier you’ll find.
Smiling can help create a positive mindset, which is crucial for achieving and maintaining wellbeing and health goals. When you approach your wellbeing journey with a positive attitude and a smile, you’re more likely to stay motivated, make healthier choices, and persevere through challenges. Smiling can contribute to a positive mindset by reducing stress, boosting mood, and enhancing overall well-being, which can in turn support your weight loss efforts.
Stress Reduction
Stress can be a significant factor contributing to weight gain or difficulty losing weight. When we’re stressed, our bodies release cortisol, a hormone that can lead to increased appetite, cravings for unhealthy foods, and abdominal fat deposition. Smiling can help reduce stress levels by triggering the release of endorphins, which act as natural stress relievers. By managing stress through smiling and other stress reduction techniques, you may be better equipped to make healthier choices and stick to your weight loss plan.
Social Support
Engaging in social interactions and building a support system can positively impact weight loss. Smiling can help create a friendly and approachable demeanour, making it easier to connect with others who share similar goals or can provide support and encouragement. By fostering positive social relationships, you can find accountability, motivation, and guidance on your weight loss journey.
It Can Make Sticking to Good Habits Easier
Smiling and maintaining a positive mindset can make physical activity more enjoyable. When you’re in a good mood and have a positive outlook, you’re more likely to engage in regular exercise, whether it’s going for a walk, participating in a fitness class, or pursuing any other form of physical activity. Regular exercise is an important component of weight loss and weight management, as it helps burn calories, build muscle, and improve overall fitness.
